Below is some information about the School Council and how it supports the school. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Council. I am looking forward to seeing you all around the school and meeting you in person!

How it Works

​The Palmerston School Council exists to provide a forum through which parents and other members of the school community can contribute to improving student achievement and the student experience.

 

​The Council communicates with Parents through a few different outlets:

• This site!

• Join the Palmerston Parents WhatsApp Chat Group (for General Announcements, updates on Sports and Clubs and groups for each grade to gather digitally with other parents with children in the same grade).

• Parents’ Facebook Page (Private) - https://www.facebook.com/groups/palmerstonpsparents/

• Also note the Council and Principal / School use School Messenger which is an automatic sign up to receive school updates.

 

Key focus areas of the Palmerston School Council include:

• to be ​a source of information for all parents;

• to provide parents with a voice at the school;

• to complement the school’s academic goals with council funded initiatives. In 2025-2026, School Council reinvested $39,000 back into the school in areas not funded by the Province/TDSB, freeing up the school’s small budget for other critical areas (such as staffing); 

• to serve as advisers to Palmerston’s administration.

Different Ways Parents can be involved in the School Council:

There are many ways that parents can get involved in School Council activities, both ongoing and ad-hoc – see more on those below!. We’d also love to hear from parents who have any special skills or connections they’d like to offer

 

Become a voting member of School Council: 

• Each year in September, at the first school council meeting, an election is held to elect a minimum of 5 voting members, and then these elected members will appoint our executive roles (Chair/co-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary). 

• Voting members are expected to attend all or most meetings and actively contribute.  Meetings are held both virtually and in person at the school in the evening with childcare available. There will be 4-6 meetings per school year.

• If you’re interested in becoming a voting member, you must submit your self-nomination in advance of the October 7th meeting to the principal. 

 

Lead or join a committee, or volunteer at an event – every enrichment activity and fundraiser at the school needs parent champions and volunteers!

There are a number of active committee groups at Palmerston, including May Fest, Pizza Lunch, Spirit Wear, and Graduation. Other committees may be formed if there is interest and need, and we have the volunteers to make them happen. For the 2026-2027 school year, we are actively looking for volunteers for: 

• Harvest Fest - October 14th. We need volunteers to pick up a load of pumpkins at a nearby farm, to cook chilli, and to help run the event. Reach out to Liv  for more info. 

• May Fest Organizing and Event Captains: This annual fun fair event held on the last Saturday of May is a beloved Palmerston tradition that is only made possible by the more than 150 volunteers who support it on the day, and leading up to it.  While May may seem like a long way away now, there is lots of planning that goes into this annual event. Contact mayfestpalmerston@gmail.com for more info. 

• Grade 6 Graduation: This is a very special event for the grade 6 kids and families, and is typically organized and run by grade 5 parents. (Other volunteers are welcome if you’re passionate about throwing a party!). Contact Liv for info.

​School Council Budget Allocation:

The School Council budget funds a series of activities in addition to those funded through the TDSB. This funding is raised throughout the school year through direct donations and fundraising initiatives that include but are not limited to:

• Harvest Festival

• Mabel’s Labels commission

• Bi-weekly Pizza Lunch

• May Fest
   

These volunteer fundraisers are strategized, planned and executed by Palmerston Parent Volunteers. Without their involvement none of the Council funded initiatives would be possible year-to-year.
